Sundays

Do young people go to church? Yes they do! And at St. Mary's it's not all as you might imagine it! One thing that won't surprise you is that we have church services on a Sunday!

Young people are particularly welcome at our 9.30am and 4.00pm services. For the first part of the service everyone is together, then if you're at secondary school, you have your own group called WAM - short for Young People With A Mission. And don't you want to make a difference?

Things are a little different on the first Sunday, with WAM getting involved running it! Once a month at both services there is a Communion service where young people are welcome.

Awayday

On the fourth Sunday of each month (in the morning) during term time, WAM meets together as a bigger group at the home of one of the leaders. This gives you time to have breakfast with your mates, to have fun playing a game and to spend longer thinking about a topic which is important to you.

Socials

On the same Sunday as the Awayday, in the afternoon or evening, there is generally a social event you can come to; there is often room for you to bring a friend too. Recent events have included snow tubing, ten pin bowling and a film night.

Weekdays

Chill Out Friday

on the third Friday evening of the month WAM meets at the home of one of the leaders. There's no teaching on these evenings - it's a chance just to chill with your mates, listening to your favourite music, chatting about your favourite (or least favourite) film, playing a game on the Wii - not to mention drinking coke and guzzling crisps.

Once A Year

Soul Survivor

Every year a group from WAM (and sometimes some friends of WAM members come too) goes camping at the Soul Survivor festival at Shepton Mallet. There you get to hang out with about 10,000 (honest!) young people, hear some top class Christian bands and listen to the awesome Mike Pilavachi and Andy Croft.

Holiday Club

For several years we have run a very successful Holiday Club for one week in the Summer. This is for younger children, many of whom come back year after year. And WE NEED YOU!! for this. As a member of WAM you can be part of the leadership team of this event. There is lots to be done – encouraging the children in the games, acting in the drama which runs every day, helping children produce something to take home in the craft, playing an instrument for the songs, running the AV system, making sure the children have FUN! - and having lots yourself in the process. There is often a special event towards the end of the week for you and the other leaders, just to say "thank you" to you.

Safeguarding

It may not interest you, but your parents will be pleased that we take our responsibility to protect young people very seriously. All our activities are covered by the Church of England's child protection guidelines and all our regular helpers are DBS checked.
